5 facts about fruits & vegetables

We eat far too much processed foods in the ‘civilised’ world. Let’s be honest, many of us could stand to eat more fruits and vegetables and on a much more regular basis, every day actually!  But learning about 5 facts about fruits & vegetables is more than just fun because fruit and vegetables, in particular, contain so, so many nutrients that are essential to our bodies.

  • They help us with brain function.
  • they provide us with energy
  • they allow our bodies to repair and regenerate
  • they fight bacteria, infections and viruses
  • they assist with reducing inflammation
  • and the list just goes on and on

There’s so much to learn about these wonderful foods and each of them are so unique with their own special function.

And just as a side, and for something really cool, here are 5 really fun but also really interesting facts about our humble fruits and vegetables.

Did you know …

  1. You can tint your hair naturally with foods such as beetroot, turmeric or saffron?
  2. Tomato is actually a fruit and not a vegetable? Consequently, ketchup is not a condiment, but really a jam?
    And, corn is a grass, bananas are berries that grow on a herb, and peanuts are a legume?
  3. Green leafy vegetables have micronutrients that boost brain function. Spinach, kale and broccoli are the top three when it comes to cognitive health.
  4. Kiwi fruits contain more Vitamin C than oranges. Just one cup of kiwi provides almost 275 per cent of the daily recommended allowance of vitamin C.
  5. Whole sesame seeds contain about 88 mg of calcium per tablespoon of seeds. Just a quarter cup of natural sesame seeds provides more calcium than a whole cup of milk. Plus, they are alkaline whereas milk is acidic.
